Leognan.

The unbearable lightness of… Bordeaux prices: Saint Emilion and the Libourne district

Our short reportage from Bordeaux area starts from the most elementary consideration: French wine, and in particular Bordeaux wine, is no doubt a wine for wealthy people! Most of the bottles, not to say all of them, have prohibitive prices for us, ordinary mortal men. And therefore their best customers are always and only the rich people of the planet. In the past they used to be American, then it was the turn of the Russians, now it’s the Chinese, tomorrow God know who. The luck of the French lies in their dual denomination “the Dutch”, and in the fact they were the first one who produced wine. The Dutch because some centuries ago they drained this area and started trading this delicious drink, and of course they were the first ones who took advantage of this commerce, and not little advantage.
But we insisted, we wanted to go deep to the heart of the matter, and discovered some interesting cellars with definitely cheap prices, offering a quality of wine as good as that of the bombastic names most of the people cannot afford to buy.
The Bordeaux area can be traced following roughly two large areas, on the right and left bank of the Gironde river: the Saint Emilion and Medoc areas. This is usually the pattern acknowledged, shown in the maps and so on. Instead we discovered some as much interesting and less visited areas, such as the CANON FRONSAC and COTE DE BOURG ones, as well as Pessac Leognan. French wine has been consecrated by passionate poets and writers, and the list could go on forever. We, humble mortals appreciated it but allow ourselves also to criticize it. We certainly do!
The word barrique for “our cousins”, the French, is often synonym of WINE! The barrique makes the wine gentle, toasted, with a vanilla flavor, smooth and one can feel these characteristics in lots of labels. This is considered a bonne faire, almost a merit for ability and elegance. We do not agree with this; no way. Vino tiene su alma y stop. The invasive barrique, as we often noticed, is unpleasant.
Our journey starts on the “droite” bank, and the first area I am going to visit is Saint Emilion, a delicious town, UNESCO heritage and a really small medieval shrine. What strikes us most is the impressive sequence of wine shops in the district. It is an apotheosis for the gourmandise, it is a tour of tasting, smelling, blind tests, hectic bargaining and the inevitable deliveries; for those who can afford it. The most beautiful experience we had as Gustocampania, was on the “droite” bank of the Gironde river, with Stephane Derenencourt, the genius of wine. He is an extraordinary man who works with a large number of Bordeaux chateau, and I must say, with excellent results, both as quality and price are concerned. Purchasing a bottle in a Chateau where Stephane works, as well as in those where Michel Rolland works, is a guarantee. Balanced, biodynamic, well structured wines but with no rustic flavor, so fascinating with their natural complexity. We start from Stephane’s creature the DOMAINE de l’A (AA),an excellent wine that is also good value for money (€ 26). For those few people who still don’t know it, the Bordeaux wines are characterized by 3 varieties of grapes (les cepages), Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc; Petit Verdot is not always used.
The Saint Emilion district is characterized by wines mostly made of Merlot, that is the principal variety of grape cultivated in this area. Merlot, meaning small blackbird, is a vigorous rustic grape, recognized as the grape adding mildness, aroma, delicacy to the cabernet wines. It loves sandy and clay-calcareous soils. It is a cepage characterized by rich scents of red fruit, plums and spices.
We first visit Chateau TROPLONG MONDOT, a first class cru according to the old Napoleonic grading dating back to 1855. The Chateau is charmant, located in a privileged place, with a high level cellar, and obviously a countless series of barriques. Two are the labels proposed by the chateau: the cru TROPLONG MONDOT and MONDOT. We tasted the 2006 TROPLONG MONDOT (AA) that has a prohibitive price (€ 236) but a Majestic and complex structure, with all the harmony and class concentrated in a chalice. Then we tasted the 2007 MONDOT (A) that has a more “reasonable” price (€ 41). It is less rich and complex but it is at the same time a delicate, pleasant wine. A few kilometers further we visit another historic brand: Chateau LA GAFFELIERE, another first class cru. Its vineyards stretch right in front of the entrance to the town, and the chateau can be easily noticed. Marvellous vineyards gently facing the south, beautiful, powerful like the wine of this Chateau. After the visit to the cellar, the tasting session is held by the kind Hugo, starting with the Chateau La Gaffeliere 2007 (around € 60) (A) a muscular spiced wine, whose 2009 vintage turns out to be more interesting (AA) (€ 65). Our tour continues on the following day with a visit to THUNEVIN that has its cru in Chateau Valandraud. We are not able to taste it, but we are introduced to other quite important labels; our tasting is limited to BAD BOY 2007 (AAA) a wine we fall in love with at first sight, comforted by its excellent price too (€ 17). It is spiced, with strong scents of black fruits, magnificent in the mouth, opulent with a fantastic long lasting final taste that sends us into raptures. The evening continues at the several cavistes of Saint Emilion and the Maison du Vin of the small town. We meet with Manù, a histrion who speaks our language: structured stylish wines, never rustic but not expensive. Manù devotes the whole evening to us, leading us through a fantastic tasting journey to the discovery of the authentic wine of the area that can be afforded by those who love this product. Chateau VRAI CANON BOUCHE’ 2007 (€ 19) (AA) is a structured, full bodied, very quaffable wine, with class. The same is for Chateau LE TROIS CROIX (AA), an elegant, complex wine with clear scent of red fruits and a very pleasant taste, at an honest price (€ 17). Definitely tipsy, we say goodbye to Manù and head to one of the several locals serving dinner in a relaxed stylish atmosphere. Wherever we have been to, food has always been of excellent quality, thanks to a fine careful cuisine, keeping high levels at any price.
On the following day, at about 30 km from Saint Emilion, we drive to Bayon on the cotes de Bourg and Blaye, precisely to Chateau FALFAS, where Ms Veronique immediately turns out to be a lovely, high style Mistress of the House. Notwithstanding it was a holiday and she had to make lunch for her family, madame patiently devoted to us her time, took us to the vineyards stretching around the chateau, then to the marvellous cellar and finally to the tasting room, where she showed us all the labels of her chateau, starting from DEMOISELLES Rosè 2008 (A), that, although I am “proverbially allergic” to rosè wines, is very pleasant and mineral. We continue with the second label of the chateau, that is LES DEMOISELLES DE FALFAS 2010 (A) (Θ), an interesting wine mostly because it fully represents the terroir: so vibrant and mineral, it is definitely a tasty wine. The cru of the house is CHATEAU FALFAS: we try the 2008 vintage (A) with is powerful vigorous acidity. Madame Veronique offers us the last emotion opening up a bottle of CHATEAU FALFAS LE CHEVALIER 2006, that is the real colossus of the chateau (AAA), an extraordinary wine, tempting, fullbodied, leaving the heaven in our mouth. It is a discovery in the true sense of the word. Prices do honour this unique family, ranging from € 7 up to maximum € 22 for the grand cru wine. A cotes de Bourg that shows to be sublime and breaks the rules of the trade. Merci madame Veronique! Just for curiosity, madame Veronique’s dad was Stephane Derenencourt’s mentor. Biodynamic wines that absolutely respect nature. For the record, all the guidebooks will suggest you try PETRUS, AUSONE CHEVAL BLANC, PAVIE and you will have to sell your car to purchase a crate of these wines. We are more humble, and apart from the wines mentioned above, suggest you taste and buy the wine produced by less famous but very good winemakers: Chateau de REIGNAC, Petrus Gaia, LA CADERIE,CLOS PUY-ARNAUD,GALAND and LA TOUR FIGEAC, reasonable prices, guaranteed quality…(to be continued)
